Updated: Apr 27

Wewak ESP-The vision of “ Promoting Excellence in PNG Cocoa and bringing the market closer to the farmers” is already taking shape as the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence & Trade Expo builds momentum in East Sepik Province.
Today, through the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence and Trade Expo Committee, thirteen international cocoa partners travelled into the heart of cocoa-growing communities in Maprik District, visiting Balif and Albinama villages to witness firsthand the production of cocoa at farm level. The delegation toured cocoa fermentaries and cocoa blocks, engaging directly with farmers and observing traditional and improved processing methods.
In a small but significant welcoming ceremony held in Balif, the international visitors were formally received by the newly appointed Maprik District Administrator, Francis Kambaka, highlighting the district’s commitment to connecting local farmers with global markets.
Speaking on behalf of the international delegation, Oonagh Browne expressed her appreciation to the people of Maprik, saying it was truly a privilege to be welcomed into their communities and to witness their cocoa production firsthand.
The farm visits reflect a key objective of the Expo: creating direct linkages between rural producers and international buyers. For many farmers in Maprik, this engagement offers a rare opportunity to showcase their cocoa and better understand international quality expectations.
The Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence & Trade Expo will run from April 21st to 23rd in Wewak, bringing together farmers, buyers, industry leaders, and government stakeholders. Preparations are well underway to ensure the three-day event delivers meaningful outcomes for the cocoa sector.
As the countdown continues, today’s visit signals more than just an engagement, it represents a growing shift toward a more inclusive cocoa industry, where farmers are directly connect
